How To Clean Bamboo Floors

Bamboo flooring is an Eco-friendly floor popularly renowned for its durability, versatility, and various styles. In comparison to hardwood flooring, it is slightly water-resistant and easy to maintain. But, that does not mean it is waterproof.

Despite their sturdy features and durability, they are subjected to common wear and tear. Failing to maintain the surface can lead the floor to moisture damage, scratch, dent, and warping. So, it is necessary to keep it intact through regular maintenance. With a regular commitment to sweeping dirt and dust from the bamboo floor surface, you can save yourself from long-term damage.

Things To avoid While Cleaning Bamboo Floors

Things To avoid While Cleaning Bamboo Floors
  • Harsh cleaning agents: Bamboo floors are sensitive material. Using abrasive detergent or chemicals like bleach, alcohol, abrasive commercial cleaners and ammonia onto the bamboo surface corrodes the space. Instead, use a non-toxic cleaning solution and spray it onto the floor.
  • Wet mopping: Even Though bamboo flooring is somewhat water-resistant, it doesn’t mean it is completely free from getting moisture damage. Wet mopping can trap liquid into the floor gaps which can make it swell and warp. So, it is highly recommended to wring the mop and make it damp before cleaning the surface.
  • Steam mops: steam mops are not ideal for bamboo flooring. The steam generated from steam cleaning can create moisture on the bamboo wood. This can lead the floor to swell and get damaged.
  • Abrasive brush:  Steer clear of harsh brush made of metal bristles. Scrubbing the bamboo floor with these materials can permanently scratch the surface. Instead, use a microfiber brush to clean dirt.
  • Waxing and oily polishes: Never wax your bamboo floor. It will make the surface slippery and result in accidents. Also avoid furniture polishes like Swiffer wet jets, undiluted castile soap, and soap.

Regular Maintenance Of Bamboo Floors

Make sure to take care of the area of your house, where there is a high volume of foot traffic. Areas like the kitchen and hallways must be mopped regularly with clean water.

  • Vacuum the floor only if it is attached with a floor cleaning attachment. Avoid the use of heavy wheels and rotating brushes. It can cause unattractive scratches on the surface.
  • Address spills as soon as possible with a microfiber cloth.
  • Dry mop your floor to keep it bacteria-free by using vinegar and water solution. Mix 1-quarter of vinegar in a cup of water, and put it in a spray bottle. Spray it onto the floor and mop the whole surface in small sections. Dry mopping will prevent the bamboo flooring from getting moisture damaged.
  • You can soak the mop into the solution if you want. Make sure to wring it properly, to prevent moisture from getting into the cracks and planks.

So, if you notice any kind of liquid spill on the floor, quickly address it before it seeps into the wood. Utilize a microfiber cloth to wipe the spill. Once the spill is removed, use a damped rag to clean the surface.

In case of a dried spill, use a commercial floor cleaner to permanently banish the stain. Food spills on the other hand need the same procedure as liquid spills. Be sure to pick up the solid pieces first, then absorb the spill with a clean towel.

In case the spill has dried, you can use a home-based cleaning solution to get rid of it. Apply vinegar and water solution for stubborn stains. Vinegar is a non-toxic cleaning agent. But, undiluted vinegar can damage and corrode the bamboo surface.
