Walk to School Week

Walk to School Week is an annual event run by the charity Living Streets. In 2011, the week runs from 16th to 20th May.

Walk to School Week is an action-packed awareness week that takes place every year, in which over 1 million children take part. If you're a parent, child, school or local authority, there are loads of resources available to help you organise fun events and activities that raise awareness about walking to school.

This year's resource theme is 'Walk Smart with Strider', focusing on road safety. Walking to school helps children learn vital road safety, awareness and orientation skills, improving their confidence for when they will walk independently when they're older.

Ongoing campaigns

Living Streets also run year-round walking promotion schemes for both primary and secondary age children.

The Walk Once a Week (WoW) scheme encourages parents and pupils to walk to school at least once a week throughout the school year. Children record how they travel to school, on a class wall chart or individual postcards. If they walk at least four times a month, they receive a badge, all of which are highly collectable, and are designed by the children themselves. Currently approximately 250,000 children take part in WoW, which is about 10% of schools in the country. Schools can buy resources to run WoW directly from Living Streets or local authorities can buy them on behalf of schools in their region.

Step Up is Living Streets’ campaign to get young people of secondary school age walking more on their school journeys. Currently, only 40% of secondary school students walk to school. Step Up is a Big Lottery funded four year project which aims to raise levels of walking by secondary students, and young peoples’ awareness of the benefits of walking. Step Up also aims to equip schools and local authorities with knowledge and skills to promote walking.
