You may have started to see posters and banners around town with the following slogans:

  • “It's not just a walk it's a work out”
  • “Best foot forward – could you walk to school?”
  • “Burn calories not cash”
  • “Stressed? Why not walk it off?”
  • “Walking, free public transport.”

It's not just a walk it's a work out

What's it all about? Well, we all know that walking is good for our health and fitness, good for the environment, and by getting us out and about, communicating and interacting with our local neighbourhoods and communities, walking is good for society too. The posters that go with these slogans are part of a new national campaign to promote walking – long the poor relation in terms of transport and health promotion.

Walking, free public transport

walkit.com was set up to encourage people to walk more by providing tools that make it clear how long a walk may take, what the benefits are, and of course providing maps and directions too. It's the core of what we do, and you'll find the A-B journey planner in a prime location of every page on the site.

Stressed? Why not walk it off?

When we added our circular walks tool, we brought many of these benefits to people looking to walk for leisure, fitness or just the pure interest of walking around the city. It's perfect for planning a lunch hour stroll, getting your 30 extra minutes of exercise a day, or exploring your environs.

Best foot forward – could you walk to school, to work, to the shops?

We believe that if you can make walking a part of your daily routine, you can make walking a habit that sticks – whether as all or part of your commute to work, travel to business meetings, taking the kids to school or just popping down the shops.  When walking becomes the default option for you the benefits are multiple – health (physical and mental), convenience (reliable journey times!), cost and environmental. And we're not the only ones who think this.

Many groups have been championing the cause of walking, both A-to-B walks (functional, practical) and circular walks (health, leisure), including Campaign for Walking, The Ramblers, Natural England's Walking for Health campaign, Living Streets, Sustrans and Walk England.

Joining that exalted group, is Walk4Life – a part of the Change4Life initiative to help everyone get more active and lead healthier lives.

The Walk4Life Miles project is now well under way – with a new website which went ‘live’ on 13th September, in time for an ITV Walk4Life day campaign on 26th September.

The project aims to make it easy for everyone, but especially people who are not currently active, to get more active by walking more. A new website, www.walk4life.info will provide a place where everyone can find a walk near to where they live. Some of these walks will be short walks, others will be Walk4Life Miles, which will be waymarked on the ground.

We're very excited by the prospect of the increased focus on walking that Walk4Life can bring, and believe it will provide a really important component of an overall set of tools to encourage more walking for health and fitness.

walkit.com is listing on our walking events and tours page many walking events that are happening in towns and cities across the country, including many Walk4Life and health walks . Indeed if you are involved in organising or promoting a free walking event (Walk4Life related or otherwise!), please list with us for free.

Here's to Walk4Life bringing even more opportunity and fun to the walking community.
