Launching in New Areas

Launching in New Areas

Launching in New Areas

Councils, PCTs and private sector bodies have sponsored us to launch walkit.com in towns and cities across the UK, and we’re always keen to launch walkit.com in new areas.

We also see great opportunities to enhance and refine our service, and make it work better for your area, your profession, or your interest group.

Please contact Martin Parretti on sales@walkit.com if you’d like to discuss options further.

Benefits of getting people walking more in your area

  • Cost – as the Secretary of State for Transport says, sustainable transport solutions can demonstrate 'extraordinarily high value-for-money', and for short distance urban travel we need to make 'cycling and walking the most attractive options'
  • Carbon – we show our users how much CO2 they save by walking instead of using a carbon-intensive mode of transport, and our survey data shows we are getting people out of cars and taxis and back on their feet
  • Congestion – avoid the punishingly high capital costs of trying to ease congestion through increased road or public transport capacity by helping people get out of cars and off crowded tubes/buses during peak hours of traffic
  • Local air quality – we can help people both reduce reliance on motorised forms of transport that worsen local air quality in the first place, and help them find walking routes that avoid the most polluted roads
  • Health – each walkit.com route shows how many calories you'll burn along the way, helping motivate people to switch to walking and therefore helping to lessen the economic and social pressures associated with poor physical and mental health
  • Urban renewal – help visitors, workers and residents enjoy and  'understand' your area on foot – research shows [PDF, p.13] that people visiting on foot spend more than those arriving by car

walkit.com will help you get people back on their feet

Our annual surveys consistently show that we are changing the way people get around town.  Of the 777 people who completed our most recent user survey in May:

  • 75.9% of respondents said that walkit.com had encouraged them (at least once) to switch to walking from another mode of transport
  • the following % of respondents said they are either 'always' or 'often' now walking instead of taking a:
    • Car – 26.5%
    • Taxi – 35.3%
    • Tube/metro/subway – 49.5%
    • Bus – 52.5%
    • Train – 24.3%
  • 53.6% of respondents said they are taking at least an extra hour of exercise per week as a result of using walkit.com

And with 130,000 people generating 400,000 routes per month (as at September 2010), that's a lot of behaviour change!

Our unique offer

walkit.com is the only dedicated route planner for urban areas.  We offer:

  • The most sophisticated A-to-B pedestrian routes by capturing and integrating detailed footpath data (e.g. across parks, by canals, along rivers) that you won't find in other journey planners
  • Variable route options, so that users can choose between direct, 'less busy' (i.e. favouring parks and avoiding busy roads) and lower pollution routes – we can even offer you a step-free routing option
  • Detailed route stats that help motivate people to walk more – journey distance and times, step counts, calorie burns and carbon savings
  • A personal mywalkit option, so that people can customise their stats to match their circumstances – their specific walking speed, weight and stride (therefore customising journey times, calorie burns and step counts)
  • Our unique circular routes, helping people work out (e.g. lunchtime) walks for health or leisure purposes
  • An events calendar where you can list for free the key walking events and tours in your area, including any led health walks
  • Customisable widgets that you can integrate into 'how to find us' pages and venues listings to encourage people to walk to meetings and events
  • Themed walks, so that you can plot and promote history, nature, health and charity walks in your area
  • Hill profiles beneath each map, which we also use to adjust journey times and calorie burns
  • The option to upload comprehensive local Points of Interest data, and where requested, we can capture detailed footpath data around schools to help with 'walk to school' initiatives
  • Integration with TransportDirect and Traveline, to help people work out the journey on foot to, from or between public transport nodes

What our partners think

TESTIMONIALS FROM PARTNERS
‘Our relationship with walkit.com has served as a fulcrum to kick-start a campaign to promote more walking
and active travel by Manchester residents. Walkit.com can help the public sector to highlight big challenges
in transport, health and environmental areas.’
Chris Gorman, Principal Policy Officer, Manchester City Council’s Transport Policy Unit
‘Walkit.com has become one of our essential resources for enabling journeys on foot.We have a
particular push on increased activity through our Healthy Towns initiative and walkit.com is a way of
removing some of the obstacles to walking – not knowing how to get somewhere and how long it will
take. We’re particularly pleased that each journey has a hill profile, avoiding the sudden realisation that
what looked flat on the A to Z is in fact a massive incline!’
Duncan McIntyre, Travel Plan Officer, Sheffield City Council
